Smart drain cover can be anti-theft

A high-tech company in China's Zhejiang province introduces smart drain covers that can prevent theft and reduce noise.

Ecns said the first smart manhole covers appeared on the streets of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, from March 17. They work against theft, shock, noise reduction and are monitored by electric cards .

" When the lid is moved and the angle of opening is greater than 15 degrees, the card will send a warning signal to us ," Xinhua quoted Tao Xiaomin, representative of Hangzhou Urban Management Office. Location will be determined immediately by the digital positioning system.

This is one of the measures to limit the stealing of manhole covers in China. According to estimates in 2013, about 240,000 sewers in Beijing were taken away and sold as scrap metal within 10 years. The city must install more than 1,000 safety lines to avoid accidents.

The smart drain cover is made of ductile cast iron and its scrap selling price is very low . About 100 smart covers will be installed on the streets of the city until the end of April.
