Smart headphones help protect hearing, hear teammates and locate enemies
The battlefield is inherently noisy because of continuous gunfire, gunfire and bombs. This poses major obstacles for soldiers on the battlefield.
If the soldiers wear headphones to protect their hearing, they will hardly be able to hear where their gunshots are coming from. But if they don't wear headphones or earplugs, their hearing will be seriously affected by gunfire.
However, scientists have successfully developed a solution that protects hearing for soldiers and can still help them detect the location of gunfire or teammates' voices.
It is a headset called TCAPS , roughly translated as Tactical Communication and Protective Systems. This system works on smartphones and is designed to help soldiers determine the location of enemies through gunfire.
The headset uses small microphones placed inside and outside the ear canal of the soldier.
The TCAPS headset uses small microphones located inside and outside the ear canal of the soldier. These microphones allow soldiers to hear their voices and filter loud noises including gunshots to protect their hearing.
The French Saint-Louis Research Institute is the place where the technology was born. Scientists have applied knowledge related to modern weapons to develop features. In fact, modern weapons often create two waves when fired. One was a supersonic shockwave shock wave in the cone in front of the bullet and the spherical wave emitted from the muzzle.

Accordingly the microphone inside the ear canal acts to measure the time difference between these two waves as they travel to the soldiers' ears. The difference data will be sent to the phone application via Bluetooth connection. The system will then use an algorithm to determine the direction of the gunfire and help soldiers locate the enemy.
Sébastien Hengy, the lead researcher shared: "If the smartphone has a good processor, the calculation time can only take about half a second ." TCAPS technology promises to be tested soon on artificial heads later this year. If all goes well, we may soon see this technology appear on the battlefield in 2021.
Introducing the TCAPS smart headset helps soldiers to protect their hearing and detect the location of gunshots.
