Solar Impulse 2 flies in the sky and lands New York

After several days of waiting, delaying and finally the world's largest solar powered aircraft Solar Impulse 2 landed early in the morning on June 10, 2016 in New York City ; the 14th stop and the final destination on American soil during the round-the-world flight.

This 14th flight; from Lehigh Valley (Pennsylvania) to New York with a distance of only about 230km, but compared to the previous flights in the US this solar-powered plane must stop waiting for the longest; long to 18 days (from May 25, 2016 to June 10, 2016) took off.

This is also the most awaited flight, first of all with New Yorkers and two astronauts and two bosses; two Swiss citizens -Brandrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg.

Looking up at the sky, New York City residents like to see "a giant dragonfly, a winged dinosaur". A wingspan of a Boeing 747, with the power of a small motorbike, has the weight and speed of a car.

And Andre Borschberg, after achieving his dream of hovering over the famous Statue of Liberty; Rounding the vast New York harbor and landing at the bustling John F. Kennedy International Airport, the plane went up and down, told CNN: "The weather last night was perfect. I feel like a 3 or 4-year-old child saw the Christmas tree.

Along with great joy with a companion, pilot Bertrand Piccard told the press about another special feeling. Going around the world, Solar Impulse 2 does not use any toxic fossil fuels that use only 17,000 solar cells spread over wings 72 meters long. And "Our goal with these flights is for a world to understand more clearly and more efficiently" about the use of clean, non-greenhouse gas polluting the atmosphere of the Earth. It is a noble goal and the ultimate message to humanity calling for preservation and enhancement of the purity of the atmosphere surrounding the Earth.

And so, the Solar Impulse 14th flight on the road around the earth has ended. It is also the end of all five routes in the following vast US territory:

  1. Stage 10: 02/5/2016, California - Phoenix, Arizona. 1199km; 15h52p
  2. 11: 12/5/2016, Phoenix, Arizona - Tulsa, Oklah. 1570 km, 18h10p
  3. 12: 21/5/2016, Tulsa, Oklahoma - Dayton, Ohio. 1113 km; 16h34p
  4. Stage 13: 25/5/2016, Dayton, Ohio - LehighValley, Pennsylvania. 1044 km, 16h47p Stage 14: June 11, 2016, Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania - New York. 230km; 4h41p.

And what awaits Swiss pilots and big bosses in the coming days in America?

It was a meeting with United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon. And most importantly, the preparation for the long flight across the Atlantic. A thorough preparation, measuring all situations for the long haul with how many uncertainties about the weather climate occurs on the vast ocean.

Let Solar Impulse 2 fulfill its plan to return to the Middle East at the end of the summer and complete the first round-the-world historic flight of the Solar Impulse 2 solar powered aircraft.
