Spain develops a fishing-boat system

A team of Spanish researchers from Ferrol Polytechnic University has developed a special propulsion system for ships. This new system replaces conventional propellers with fins. The engine recreates swimming motion similarly to fish and other aquatic organisms.

The research project led by Professor Primitivo Gonzalez Lopez will last for three years. The goal is to make a moving boat prototype by being driven by two fins on the port and starboard. Professor Lopez built this boat prototype but moved with a single fin.

Although in other countries that used to have a similar system, this invention is new because the fin is not only used as a push system but also as an energy generator. Prof. Juan de Dios asserted that the prototype would be capable of converting the flow of water and air into electrical energy.

The new propulsion system will help improve energy efficiency and fuel economy. Professor Lopez explains that around normal propellers form swirling currents that cause energy losses. This phenomenon does not occur with the fins so that the new system performs better.
