NGC 2207 and IC 2163 , names of two galaxies twisted in the Canis Major constellation, are in the process of merging into a galaxy. Scientists from the US Aeronautics Agency (NASA) have created their images from image data of the Spitzer space telescope (red) and the Hubble space telescope (blue).
About 40 million years ago, NGC 2207 and IC 2163 met. Like two dancers, they are preparing to merge. Their "dance" will end after about a billion years. Then the two spiral galaxies will become a new galaxy shaped like an ellipse.
