Stop issuing carbon emissions permits to airlines

The possibility of a global aviation trade war has been ruled out after the European Commission (EC) decided to suspend plans to force airlines around the world to buy carbon emissions permits when using Use of airports in Europe.

The EC plan could cost major airlines around the world more than $ 17.5 billion over the next eight years.

Under the plan proposed by the EC, airlines that use the airport system in Europe must buy a license if they exceed the greenhouse gas emission limit, or be fined.

However, this move of the EC has been strongly opposed by governments outside Europe, such as the US, Russia, India and China, and threatens to retaliate.

Last September, the US Senate also passed a law that allowed the Secretary of Transportation to issue orders to US airlines not to cooperate with the EC on the grounds that the plan violated national law. sacrifice. According to them, any proposal related to greenhouse gas emissions must be made by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

EC's environmental commissioner Connie Hedegaard said the EC agreed to suspend the implementation of the plan and asked ICAO in the next 12 months to come up with the agency's plan. In the opposite case, the EC will continue to propose the implementation of the plan.
