Strange church has the ability to 'disappear'
As a mix of architecture and art, when viewed from a particular perspective, this church seems to "disappear".
The church has the ability to 'disappear'
'Reading between the Lines' is the brainchild of Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, who runs the architectural firm Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.
This "self-disappearing" church was built in the city of Borgloon (Belgium), consisting of 2000 steel columns and 100 evenly stacked steel plates, forming a space between the cathedral and a steeple.
Inspired by local churches, this 9-meter-tall church was built into a public art facility located on a local walking path.
Viewers can access the building from different directions and witness an optical illusion when viewed from a particular angle.
Therefore, viewers feel that the church seems to be disappearing before their eyes when light penetrates the steel plates stacked horizontally.
This structure can also make viewers more confused when viewed from the inside because the position of the sun makes the transformation effect immeasurable and surprising when projected through the columns of the church, creating a special feeling sacred.
However, because focusing on sight is more than reality, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh has made the design of the church center based on the experience it brings to visitors.
It is this building that stands out for the creativity of architects.
The rural landscape makes the church quieter and more religious.
