According to Christopher Gobler, professor of marine ecology at Stony Brook University in the US, Dunaliella salinas is the cause of the red lake water. When a large amount of water in the lake evaporates, elevated salt levels will kill most plankton , a type of algae that eat algae. The overgrowth of algae causes the lake water to turn bright red.

ABC News said that the lake will retain its strange color until all water evaporates in August, leaving behind a giant pan of dry salt. The lake water will then be filled again in winter.

Meanwhile, the Grand Prismatic Spring multicolored lake in Yellowstone National Park, which contains many bacteria, can make the water different colors like a rainbow.
