Students 'racing' to ... scientific research

The chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda will create a 'jet' that pushes 'racing cars' in a certain distance.

This chemical reaction has been described in the form of a video clip called "STEAM - Super Racer" . This clip has just won the highest prize in the 'Make STEM simulation clip 2017' organized by Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union.

Describe this clip, Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Diep , chemistry teacher, Australian International School (base in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City), said the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar will create carbon dioxide. (CO 2 ). This gas will form a repulsive force, pushing the model car (made of plastic bottles) in a certain distance.

With the implementation of this chemical model, students will understand why the car can move, use Newton's laws to determine the physical elements of the phenomenon.

Based on the thrust of the chemical reaction, students can also calculate the distance traveled by the vehicle, depending on the friction force, the movement direction of the vehicle .

'With this game, we want students to explore and apply scientific knowledge in many fields to create the racing car they want. In addition to using scientific knowledge, students are also excited to create their own cars that they like. This shows that scientific knowledge can be combined with artistic value, ' said Diep.

In addition to the STEAM clip - Super race driver, Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union has awarded 6 other clips that won the contest prizes in the morning of December 21.

Mr. Doan Kim Thanh, Director of the Center for Young Science and Technology Development, Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, said that during more than 2 months of implementation, the contest attracted 40 clips of 80 teenagers from 18 applications. location in the city.

'The implementation of STEM simulation videos has important implications for teaching in schools, helping students access science better. We hope, after the competition, there will be more schools and educational institutions interested in STEM ' - Mr. Thanh said.
