Surgery for an unborn baby
On September 29, published scientific journal of Pregnancy Diagnosis and Therapy, for the first time in the world, the specialty doctors of Bonn University Hospital (Germany) successfully conducted the surgery to click Prefer the development of the lungs in a fetus.
Previously, doctors were concerned that the fetus would not survive because the mother had ruptured amniotic fluid in the 20th week of pregnancy, meaning that the liquid protecting the fetus was lost. Without this liquid, the internal organs will press on the lungs, seriously weakening the development of the fetus. This is also a favorable condition for bacteria to enter the womb, increasing the risk of infection, threatening the life of the child.
To perform this complicated surgery, the doctors put a specialized surgical device, about the size of a ballpoint pen, into the fetal membrane through a small groove in the mother's abdomen. Next, with the support of the camera and ultrasound, the doctors moved the device through the mouth, then into the windpipe of the fetus that was in the womb. There, a tiny bubble made from a very thin rubber film is inflated to prevent the amount of liquid, as the lungs continuously release, escaping. The formation of this liquid stimulated the development of fetal lungs.
This is also the first case of Professor Thomas Kohl, the chief operating officer, using albumin serum protein, which increases the amount of concentrated water in the lungs and enhances the effectiveness of the latex bubble. The professor said that the bubble was in the lungs for five days, and during that time, the fetal double lung weight nearly doubled.
The fetus was later born in the 33rd week, and is now a very healthy one year old baby, named Miriam.
