Yousafzai, born in 1997, was a leading candidate for last year's Nobel Peace Prize. She was seriously wounded by the Taliban in October 2012 because of the struggle for the rights of girls to go to school.

Satyarthi, 60, was extremely brave when he led groups to protest against the exploitation of child labor in India.

With this award, Yousafzai, 17, becomes the youngest person to receive a Nobel Prize. The youngest person before that was Lawrence Bragg, an Australian-born British scientist. He received the Nobel Prize in physics with his father in 1915, when he was 25 years old.

This year, five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee have jointly selected the most deserving person or organization of the 278 nominations, the most number in the history of the tournament. This list is always a secret to the last minute.

Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Chemical Restraint Organization (OPCW) for its efforts to destroy chemical weapons.

The title has been changed.
