Researchers have discovered a new centipede belonging to the Illacese family , which not only possesses 414 feet, 200 poisonous glands but also has 4 peniss that change from limbs during evolution to sperm pumping. The discovery was published October 20 in ZooKeys magazine, according to Live Science.

The 20mm centipede was discovered by biologist Jean Krejca during a Lange marble cave expedition at Sequoia National Park in California, USA in October 2006. Krejca then sent samples to expert Paul Marek at Virginia Institute of Technology and William Shear at Hampden-Sydney University for analysis.

The team called the new centipede the Illuminati tobini , named after Ben Tobin, a cave specialist in the Grand Canyon Park, who organized the expedition. They spent a few more years searching for new Lange species and 63 other locations around the low hills at the foot of the Sierra Nevada range but not found.

Because the only specimen the team collected was a male, they did not know what the female shape was like. According to scientists, I. tobini has no eyes and eats mushrooms. The 9th and 10th pairs of animals transform into a penis called a "mating foot" (gonopod). These legs are covered with a sharp tip to pump sperm from males to females. I. tobini also has 200 poisonous glands to defend against predators.

Another centipede of this family, Illacme plenipes , was found in Benito County, California, 240km from Lange Cave. With 750 feet, I. plenipes are the most legume centipede on the planet.
