The Ministry of Environmental Protection of China conducted a survey of car numbers and air pollution levels in 113 cities. The number of cars sold in China reached 13.64 million last year, an increase of 46% compared to 2008. That number could increase to 17 million this year, up 25% compared to 2009.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection said they would tighten regulations on vehicle emissions as well as strengthen surveillance. Projects to upgrade gas stations, oil tanks and tankers are being carried out in many cities to reduce emissions, the report said.

The Chinese government has called on car manufacturers to make vehicles that do not pollute the environment, such as cars that use electric motors or both electricity and gasoline.
