The EU plans to cut 80% of nylon bags by 2019
The European Parliament has voiced support for a draft plan to cut 50% and 80% of nylon bags in 2017 and 2019 respectively, compared to 2010.
The European Union (EU) estimates that every citizen in the continent uses an average of nearly 200 nylon bags a year and about 8 billion bags are used and then discarded in 2010, causing environmental pollution.
The draft calls on member states to choose appropriate strategies to address this situation, such as taxation on plastic bags, nylon bags, restrictions or their use .
However, while environmental groups expressed their applause, many representatives from nylon packaging production facilities protested against this rule, because the continent needed to raise people's awareness as well. such as better control of waste, instead of just issuing new prohibitions.
According to the European Commission (EC), Denmark has become the lowest EU plastic bag user with an average of 4 bags / person / year thanks to the implementation of a tax measure on nylon bags. .
Meanwhile, in countries that have not yet adopted any measures such as Portugal, Poland and Slovakia, this figure amounts to 466 bags / person / year.
These draft regulations will be discussed by EU ministers and will be forwarded to the European Parliament for approval in the second half of this year.
