The information was published by the hospital Georges Pompidou European in Paris, where the surgery was performed. The hospital also added that it was not possible to determine the exact cause of death at this time.

The patient was a 76-year-old man, who received an artificial heart transplant due to chronic heart failure - his heart could not transmit enough blood to body parts. Doctors have concluded that he can only live for weeks, even days.

The replacement heart was made by French company Carmat, designed to take on the role of a true heart for five years, and operate on the power taken from an external lithium-ion battery. It is implanted in the patient's chest and has about 3 times the weight of the real heart (nearly 1kg).

The heart was created to help thousands of heart patients, who are at risk of dying because they cannot find a donor with a longer chance of survival.

Experimental surgery is considered successful if the patient can survive with a transplanted heart for at least 1 month. In the near future there will be three more patients with artificial heart transplants, and if this test is successful, the artificial heart designed by Carmat will be inserted into the body of about 20 patients with milder disease.

Carmat estimates that about 100,000 American and European patients can benefit from the successful creation and implantation of artificial hearts. In the market, artificial hearts can be worth up to 16 million euros.
