This is the largest gecko species remaining on Earth. New Caledonian giant gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus) is endemic to New Caledonian island, the island is known as the New World in the southwest Pacific.

Adults can grow up to 36cm in length. R.leachianus is a tree-dwelling species, active at night and has little movement. They only move when necessary.

The shaggy body also has the ability to change colors between green, gray and sepia, making them perfectly camouflaged in the trees.

New Caledonian geckos mainly eat insects, spiders and small vertebrates. They also eat fruit and nectar.

The habitat is destroyed, iron fires made animals and carnivores like wild cats are the main threats to the world's largest gecko.
