The lonely radar protects the United States from sudden missile attacks
The birth of Cobra Dane was part of the Strategic Arms Limit II or SALT II signed in 1976.
One of the largest radars on the planet and playing an important role in protecting the United States, Cobra Dane is the most lonely radar when its location lies on an island off the coast of the United States.
The Air Station Eareckson base is located on the farthest edge of American Frontier, about 2.3km west of Anchorage, Alaska. It is also home to one of the largest radars ever built called Cobra Dane .
The fixed radar turned to the West and its main task was to alert the missile attacks, targeting the US territory.
The birth of Cobra Dane was part of the Strategic Arms Limit II or SALT II signed in 1976. Radar lies at the protruding tip of the island of Shemya. Radar is 36 meters high and 28 meters wide. This huge architectural block can even be seen from outer space.
Radar with angle and coverage range up to 136 degrees.
The Cobra Dane main unit is an antenna array that has been L-Band-phase, operating primarily in the frequency range 1175-1375MHz. Radar with angle and coverage range up to 136 degrees. With a large coverage angle, Cobra Dane can observe a wide enough space, surrounding the border longer than 3000km adjacent to Russia.
Cobra Dane can detect and track up to 120 targets at once and the ability to focus accurately track 20 of them.
As soon as there is a target of approaching and launching missiles toward US territory, the Cobra Dane radar system will issue a warning to the mainland.
Not only used to protect America from missile attacks, Cobra Dane also participates in space monitoring. Radar can collect satellite and space waste data, factors that can affect cosmic journeys.
The device's space observation range is quite wide, up to 45 thousand kilometers and the radar has the ability to store more than 12,000 targets in space at the same time. Eareckson Air Station is the only land in US territory that soldiers can observe Russian territory from the other side.
