Pollution is never more serious in Chinese cities. Officials are often said to be underestimating the seriousness of the problem in urban areas, especially in the capital, Beijing. Official statistics are sometimes contrary to the measurements of non-governmental organizations.

The United States and China had a row last year about pollution in Beijing, when a device located at the US embassy in the city showed that the air pollution index here exceeded the allowed level.
