The silver-headed eagle, the symbol of the United States, once stood at risk of extinction because hunting and DDT poisoning are now saved and even their numbers are rising.
Today, the US Department of the Interior has declared the eagle's name removed from the list of endangered animals, ending efforts over the last four decades to save them.
Biologists have counted at least 10,000 pairs of birds that are paired all over the United States. In 1963, only 417 pairs of birds were found in 48 states. Before Europeans migrated, it was estimated that at least half a million early silver eagles lived in the United States.
