The researchers figured out how to increase the WiFi transmitter range to an additional 67m just by updating the software
With the rise of mobile devices, improving Wi-Fi coverage to access the Internet in nooks and crannies of the home is a top concern for many people. Typically, users will have to buy additional Wi-Fi amplifiers to increase coverage. However, these devices do not always work as advertised, while the selling price is quite expensive.
Understanding this, researchers have recently found a new solution to the problem of "increasing the range / Wifi range: A software protocol that increases the reception / transmission range of Wifi waves by more than 60m. compared to existing protocols ".
A team of researchers, led by computer engineers at Brigham Young Unviersity University, called the new protocol the term "On-Off Noise Power Communication" (ONPC).
With the protocol being used in Wifi technology at the present time, users must ensure their homes have a minimum Internet access speed of 1 Mb / s to maintain the signal. But with ONPC alone, to be able to work smoothly, this new protocol requires only a minimum Internet speed of about 1b / s - lower than . a million times!
ONPC protocol allows to increase the receiving / transmitting range of Wifi to an additional 67m.
According to Engadget, the protocol works by allowing Wi-Fi devices to send a special signal, in addition to sending / receiving data as usual.
Specifically, the new protocol allows the device to continuously send a string of binary numbers (including 0 and 1) to the Wifi router, to 'notify' the device that is still transmitting. Even without any data being sent, the WiFi continues to be maintained.
"It simply sends a bit of information to inform it is still active, " said Professor Neal Patawri of the University of Washington.
Notably, during the test, the researchers found that the ONPC protocol allowed to increase the receiving / transmitting range of Wifi waves by 67m, much wider than the broadcast range of the Wifi protocol standard. old.
Even better, since ONPC is programmed on the existing Wifi protocol, researchers can easily update to all WiFi transceiver / transceiver devices via a software update, at least in terms of theory.
