The unexpected cause makes many people susceptible to gout

New work from John Hopkins University (USA) shows that genetic factors of gout (gout) may be much stronger than previously thought.

Authors from the Bloomberg School of Public Health (John Hopkins University) have found 183 locations, called "loci," in the human genome linked to gout . In the past, the disease was thought to be related to a genetic predisposition, but few because only 36 loci were known.

To reach this result, the scientists studied 334,880 volunteers, "scoring" risks for them based on genetic factors. People with the highest risk score among these can be up to 3 times more likely to get the disease.

According to the authors, many of the genes involved in these 183 loci affect the activity of the kidneys, urinary tract and liver, playing an important role in regulating serum urate levels. One of the highest-risk gout genes discovered in the study also involved regulating blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which could explain whether gout and high cholesterol are associated. .

Dr - epidemiologist Adrienne Tin, lead author of the study, said the results could be a prerequisite for testing methods to identify people who are at high genetic risk for gout. From this, the doctor can give the right advice on the diet for this high-risk group, because a diet high in protein is still a major cause of the discomfort, pain and risk of causing this disability.
