Reindeer must chew seaweed because they are too hungry.

According to a recent study by Brage Bremset Hansen - a biologist from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, currently one-third of the 20,000 reindeer in this country are earning food right on the coast.

"They don't seem to be able to just eat seaweed," Hansen said. "They move between beaches and discover that some plants have melted in small quantities. So of course they have to eat anything that can be found."

The Svalbard reindeer is currently isolated on an island, only poisoning the road with ice connected to other places is now melting. They become more and more desperate. Plants often eat too deep under the snow, and they are forced to switch to seaweed.

Svalbard reindeer often suffers from diarrhea from eating seaweed.

Seaweed has a rich source of nutrition, but it is not suitable for reindeer. According to Hansen, they often suffer from diarrhea from eating seaweed.

Tragedy also lies in the fact that seaweed reindeer phenomenon has been previously recorded, but mostly in winter with extremely limited frequency. Now, this behavior is recorded more frequently.

The truth is that this planet is changing too fast compared to what organisms can respond to.

According to Hansen, the Arctic region is currently heating up at a rate three times faster than the rest of the world. More rain falls, while less snow appears. High rainfall and low temperatures created very hard ice sheets, making it impossible for plants to be buried under ice and reindeer.

Reindeer to eat seaweed can be considered part of the adaptation process. However, the truth shows that this planet is changing so fast compared to what organisms can respond to.

In 2016, a study showed that mature Svalbard reindeer with average weight decreased from 55kg to 48kg compared to the 1990s. This figure is 20kg lower than the ideal weight they should reach.

The study is published in Ecosphere magazine.
