300,000 reindeer gathered to avoid flies and mosquitoes

Humans are not the only species that are disturbed by flies.Recently, a biologist captured a picture of about 300,000 reindeer gathered into herds like ants to reduce the risk of being attacked by flies.

This is one of the most epic gatherings in the animal world, Kyle Joly, a biologist in Fairbanks National Park, Alaska, commented.

Joly took many photos as he flew over the Cessna 185 area, near the Noatak National Reserve and Cape Krusenstern National Monument in Alaska.

'Insects in this area are quite aggressive. Reindeer is harassed by flies and mosquitoes all day and night. Flies also lay eggs on reindeer, mosquitoes go into their noses to spawn , " Joly said.

To avoid unpleasant insects, reindeer moves to dry and higher places. They snuggle together to reduce the area of the exposed body for insect attacks.

This caribou is a group of North Pole reindeer herds, comprising about 325,000 children. After the harassment of mosquito flies diminished, the reindeer separated very quickly and crossed the Brooks and North Ribs and reunited to migrate south together throughout the fall.

Reindeer is the bait of wolves, grizzly bears and humans. People hunt about 15,000 reindeer every year. Yearly reindeer population decreased by about 5%, Joly said.

Northwestern Alaska is still extremely sparse, although many development projects are planned to exploit oil and gas and minerals. When those plans are implemented, the migratory behavior and habitat of reindeer will be greatly disturbed.
