Researchers at the University of Oxford, UK published documents showing Dexamethasone - a familiar and cheap anti-inflammatory drug that can save many Covid-19 patients.
In a Covid-19 treatment study conducted by the University of Oxford, scientists found that Dexamethasone could save many patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The study was clinically tested on 15% of patients with Covid-19 in the UK, comparing the survival rate of 2,104 patients randomly injected with Dexamethasone to 4,321 patients who received normal care after 28 days.
Results showed that Dexamethasone had a 29% reduction in mortality in patients on ventilators and 21.5% in those on oxygen breathing. Based on this result, 1 in 8 patients on ventilators was saved by Dexamethasone.

It also saved one in 25 patients who did not use a ventilator but did take medication. However, for patients who do not resort to breathing support, the drug does not affect mortality.
According to the study, Dexamethasone is very important for patients who are in the final stages of fighting SARS-CoV-2. Although the study has not been reviewed, many doctors and scientists have also acknowledged the drug's ability to treat severe Covid-19 patients, even though they were not involved in the study.
"We currently do not have any treatment to reduce mortality in Covid-19 patients. This is the first major study to show an intervention that can help improve survival , " said Craig Coopersmith. , the surgeon and the director of the Emory Care Center said.
However, this drug is only effective when used properly, and can even be harmful to mild patients. Therefore, it should be noted the time and dose of injection to bring the best effect.
Dexamethasone is cheap and widely sold. When put into treatment, patients only cost 6 USD / day. If treatment is about 7-10 days, experts predict the cost is only about 44 USD.

Anti-inflammatory drugs of the corticosteroid group such as Dexamethasone are widely used in the treatment of Covid-19 related respiratory syndromes such as SARS, MERS, severe influenza and pneumonia.
Prior to this research report, many treatment guidelines recommended 'contraindicated' or 'not recommended' corticosteroids in the treatment of Covid-19.
"This is significant because it clears out the confusion for so long, showing that this treatment is effective if used at the right time in the course of treatment , " said Mark Slifka, a research scientist. Research on immunology and vaccine development at the University of Oregon, USA.
