Thousands of ice balls cover the coast of Finland
Ice balls cover the beach, creating a pleasant surprise for those brave guests who don't manage the cold to visit Hailuoto Island, Finland.
Sirpa Tero said the ice spheres seemed to stretch for many kilometers.(Photo: Instagram).
'It's a fantastic phenomenon, I've never seen it,' Tarja Terentjeff told CNN. 'The whole beach is full of ice balls'.
Terentjeff, who lives in Oulu, about 60 km away, drove a 30-minute ferry from the mainland to the island to see this magnificent sight.
Hailuoto is located in the Gulf of Bothnia, separating Finland and Sweden in the farthest north part of the Baltic Sea.
Sirpa Tero told CNN she had seen this scene, but not on such a large area. She said the ice seemed to stretch for many kilometers.
The above iceballs were created when strong water swept near the shore changed the soft ice layers, according to CNN. The layers of soft tape stick together, overlap, in 'super cold' water. The waves continued to hit the shore, causing the ice blocks to spin in place, turning them into balls.
