Why does coffee stain teeth?

'Tannins stick to tooth enamel and cause teeth to yellow, but there are ways to minimize this staining,' adds dentist Tina Saw.
How to prevent coffee from staining your teeth
Limit your coffee intake
If you can't give up coffee, you can still reduce the yellowing by limiting your intake. 'You should not drink more than two cups of coffee a day,' advises Dr. Osei-Fosu.
Meanwhile, according to Dr. Saw, the timing of coffee drinking should also be considered. You should drink all your coffee in one sitting instead of sipping throughout the day to minimize staining on tooth enamel.
Use a straw
How you drink your coffee can also affect your teeth. According to Dr. Saw, drinking coffee straight from the cup increases the number of times the coffee touches your teeth, causing them to become stained. Therefore, you should use a straw whether you drink hot or iced coffee to protect your teeth.
'Drinking coffee through a straw is one of the best ways to minimize tooth stains,' says Dr Saw.

Black coffee can be a strong stainer, but you can add milk or cream to your coffee to dilute the acidic staining properties of the coffee.
Brush your teeth 30 minutes after drinking coffee
Instead of brushing your teeth immediately after drinking coffee, you should wait 30 minutes to avoid yellowing your teeth.
Dr Saw says: 'As a dentist, I recommend brushing your teeth 30 minutes after drinking coffee. Coffee is acidic and brushing immediately can break down the enamel on your teeth. You want to give your saliva time to coat your teeth and protect them from the acid attack. Also, brushing 30 minutes after drinking coffee can help remove any yellow stains on your teeth before they form.'
Use an electric toothbrush
According to Dr. Saw, electric toothbrushes are more effective at keeping teeth white and removing stains and plaque between teeth than regular toothbrushes.
Drink water after drinking coffee
After enjoying your coffee, it's best to rinse your mouth with water. Dr. Osei-Fosu explains that drinking water after drinking any colored beverage will help prevent staining of your teeth. You should drink a glass of water after drinking coffee to rinse your mouth and protect your teeth.
Floss every day
If you don't already have a daily flossing routine, you should start as soon as possible. Dr. Saw recommends flossing every day because it can prevent yellowing of teeth by removing plaque from between your teeth.
Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing gum causes more saliva to be secreted, helping to neutralize and balance the oral environment.
"The purpose of sugar-free gum is to activate the salivary glands. So the more saliva you have, the easier it is to neutralize the oral environment. You can also eat fruits like apples or bananas to counteract the acidity of coffee, but avoid acidic fruits like oranges and grapefruits ," the dentist analyzed.
Pay attention to oral hygiene
Proper oral hygiene helps prevent yellowing and discoloration. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
'Have your teeth cleaned and checked at least twice a year,' says Dr. Osei-Fosu.
Additionally, Dr. Osei-Fosu and Dr. Saw recommend adding some healthy habits like drinking water after meals, getting your teeth whitened at a reputable dental facility twice a year, using whitening toothpaste at night, and flossing daily.
