Twin panda in Japan
A large Chinese panda gave birth to twins at a zoo in Japan, bringing the total number of pandas born from artificial insemination this year to a record of 30.
The baby pandas were born on December 23 at Adventure World in Wakayama, 453 km southwest of Tokyo. Both " mother and baby " are healthy, although one in two babies born prematurely weighs only 84 grams.
Mei Mei's 12-year-old mother and 14-year-old Eimei are both lent by China. Winter birth is extremely rare for pandas in captivity breeding programs. The sex of the juveniles has yet to be announced.
Large pandas are one of the rarest species in the world with about 1,590 live in nature in China, mostly in Sichuan and eastern Hsienxi. About 180 other children were born in captivity.
