Unusual frost makes 36,000 penguins die in Antarctica

About 36,000 Adelie penguins died due to lack of food in Antarctica during their breeding season.

According to the BBC, the land of Terre Adelie , the territory of Adelie penguins , witnessed the deaths of more than 36,000 newborn penguins. Only two newborns of the penguin herd survived the disaster.

The cause of the biological disaster is thought to be due to the unusually high density of ice covering the eastern sea of Antarctica, making it difficult for individual penguin parents to find food to maintain the live for their children.

"The increased ice area makes the individual parents have to travel very far to get food, they have to travel more than 100km from every year," Yan Ropert-Coudert, expert from the National Science Research Institute Dharma, said.

Experts from the Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the disaster this time only happened with a separate flock of penguins in Adelie. Antarctica will warm up, ice will melt away. However, this will probably cause other challenges in the future.

WWF is calling on governments to issue fishing bans on the eastern Antarctic waters to minimize competition for food sources with Adelie penguins, while preserving other Antarctic species.

Measures to rescue Antarctic species will be discussed at the Antarctic Marine Conservation Commission (CCAMLR) meeting, scheduled for October 16.

Earlier, about 150,000 Adelie penguins died in 2015 after a giant iceberg stuck to the Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica, leaving penguins unable to find food.
