Viet Duc Hospital prepares the first lung transplant from people for brain death

Expected in September, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital (Hanoi) performs lung transplant for the first adult from a brain dead donor.

Due to the difficult nature of this transplant surgery, doctors of Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital calculated 3 options for implementation. One is to invite foreign experts to participate in the operation, however, the transplant is still mainly performed by Vietnamese doctors. The second option is that it may not be possible to invite foreign experts, Vietnamese doctors to conduct the operation themselves. Option 3 is the hospital invites a foreign expert to assist with the transplant.

According to Professor Trinh Hong Son, Deputy Director of Viet Duc Hospital, Director of the National Organ Coordination Center, lung transplant cases will face many difficulties. Convincing people with lung transplant disease is not easy, while the lung is an organ transplant that is most susceptible to infection, resuscitation after transplantation is also extremely challenging.

"However, the hospital has carefully prepared for transplantation from transplant sources, recipients, surgeons, equipment, modern machines, operating tables . All preparations are ready, hard work. Post-transplant squirrels are also planned, ' said Professor Son.

In February, Vietnam first successfully performed a lung transplant for a child from a survivor. The surgery was carried out by doctors of Military Hospital 103, Military Medical Academy in collaboration with Japanese experts.

According to Professor Son, the team of national organ transplant specialists is ready for new grafting areas such as quadrilateral transplantation, face transplantation, grafting and uterine transplantation. With four limbs, technically, the experts are not concerned because in fact the self-grafting of the unfortunate people has been done a lot and has been very successful.

In the world, some countries have performed uterine transplants, with successful cases but there are also failures. There are mothers who have given birth successfully from a grafted uterus. Sweden successfully performed 9 uterine transplants, while in the US only one.

By May 31, the number of organ transplants in Vietnam was more than 2,400. In particular, Vietnam successfully performed more than 2,300 kidney transplants, 77 liver transplants, 18 heart transplants, a kidney-pancreas transplant, a lung transplant from live donors.
