Vitamin C can help fight osteoporosis

Researchers at the University of Medicine Moint-Sinai (USA) have for the first time demonstrated that vitamin C can protect the body from osteoporosis in the body.

Osteoporosis is a common disease of old age, related to the evolution of human physiological processes.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a marked reduction in bone density and quality, which is suffered by 1 in 3 women and 1 out of 5 men over age 50.

According to statistics, direct costs for osteoporosis treatment in European countries amount to 32 billion euros per year. The disease is considered the most common, making people most weakened and also costing it the most expensive at the former continent.

Vitamin C works to prevent osteoporosis.

Studies conducted on lab rats that had separated the ovaries (which caused a decrease in bone density). These mice were compared with the control group of mice through 'fake' surgery (still leaving the ovary).

Mice cut the ovaries divided into 2 groups, one group for 6 consecutive weeks to eat a large amount of vitamin C, the second group did not. During the experiment, experts periodically determined the density of bone minerals in the lumbar portion of the spine, femur and tibia.

The results showed that mice with ovarian and non-vitamin C intake had a much lower mineral density than mice in the control group. In mice that did not cut the ovaries and received a large dose of vitamin C, the mineral density was equal to that of the control mice.

This result assumes that vitamin C itself prevents the loss of mineral density in bones, which leads to osteoporosis.

According to the author of the study, professor of medicine Mona Zaidi, further studies can prove that supplements are able to prevent osteoporosis in humans.

If this is the case, this will be an extremely useful development for people living in developed countries who are now incapable of traveling.
