According to the TRAFFIC international wildlife surveillance network, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between South Africa, the country with the largest number of rhinos in the world and Vietnam, the largest consumer market, will soon be signed. .
Speaking to reporters at the organization's latest report announcement, the head of TRAFFIC's elephant and rhino project, Tom Milliken, said: "I think the pressure is clearly on the Vietnamese side and "We are going to see some changes. Mavuso Msimang, rhino problem manager of the Ministry of Environmental Affairs of South Africa, also mentioned the cooperation between this country and Vietnam on "important issues on biodiversity management". to prevent rhino horn exports to Vietnam.
South Africa is home to about three-quarters of Africa's 20,000 white rhinos and 4,800 black rhinos are in serious danger.
In 2011, a total of 448 rhinos were killed in the country and since the beginning of the year, nearly 300 have been poached. Rhino horn is said to be smuggled to East Asia, including Vietnam.
