Volcanic eruption in Indonesia, 7 people died

Seven people were killed and two were in danger after the Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia erupted on May 21.

According to Reuters, the 2,460-meter high mountain located on Sumatra island is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Military and police are still searching for survivors in the area.

"It is not clear how many people are in Gamber village because when the volcano erupts hot ash, there seems to be no activity in this area," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Reduction Agency (BNPB) said.

A few years ago, the Indonesian government imposed many red areas around Sinabung crater, including Gamber village. In 2014, when Sinabung erupted, more than 10 people were killed and thousands were evacuated.

Sinabung is located about 1,900km northwest of Jakarta. Today, volcanoes continue to spray hot ash, endangering the search and rescue work.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, with more than 120 active volcanoes.
