Hot air streams and ash from the crater from last night spilled over the slopes of the Merapi volcano, causing fires in a village on the mountainside and creating a chaotic evacuation in the middle of the night.

Men with dust-covered faces fell from Merapi volcanic slopes, rushing to evacuate by motorbike. Meanwhile, women and children screamed and cried in the trucks as officials announced on the loudspeaker that they would expand back to the danger zone of the volcano.

11 employees working at a major volcanic monitoring station are also required to move to a more remote area. Authorities have decided to expand the danger zone around the volcano from 15km to 20km.

48 people were killed and at least 66 others were injured in a new eruption last night.

Waluyo Raharjo, a search and rescue official, said bodies from the worst-affected village, Bronggang, about 15km from Merapi, were being taken to the morgue of a hospital.

Merapi, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, is in the middle of a densely populated area in central Java. Since 'waking up' on October 26, Merapi has claimed the lives of a total of 92 people. About 75,000 people had to evacuate.
