Warning about health status from urine

Body waste, especially urine, reveals a lot of things about your health.

Here are the advice from urologist Marc Laniado, of Doctify Health Services (UK) about what to do if you notice something unusual from urine .

Tell us what you have eaten

We can easily find the food that is the culprit that makes the breath smell bad. However, few people know that some special foods also affect the smell of urine.

Some foods such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, radish, cauliflower and garlic can have an effect on the smell of urine that makes them smell bad. So if you notice strange smells, remember what you have eaten recently.

Reminder about what you drink

Coffee is likely to affect your urine. So if you find urine with a hint of coffee, that's not strange.

You are dehydrated

If urine has a strong smell, it may be a good idea to add water immediately. If there is not enough water to dilute urine, it will be darker and stronger than usual.

Usually urine has the strongest smell in the morning because dehydration takes place after a long night and this improves when you start drinking more water during the day.

Note the medicines you are using

Are you taking antibiotics or epilepsy medication? It may be the culprit that makes urine smell strange. Some types of sulpha drugs, also known as sulphonamide , can cause urine to have an unpleasant odor. Sulphonamide is often used in the treatment of infections and seizures.

Signs of infection

UTI is an infection of one or several organs in the urinary system (kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra). This may cause a strange odor of urine. In particular, if accompanied by a burning sensation or hot, thirsty constantly, go to the hospital to check the health status.

Diabetes warning

People with diabetes that have not been diagnosed may notice slightly fragrant urine. If symptoms appear like constant thirst, headaches and more urination, you need to see a doctor. If urine smells moldy, it may be a sign of liver failure.

Leakage appearance

Occasionally, a fistula between the intestine and bladder can cause urine to have an unpleasant odor as well as the cause of a urinary tract infection.
