Warning tragedy meteor strike, wipe out life on Earth

A leading astronomer believes that the scenario of an asteroid plummeting to Earth, wiping out the life of mankind is only a matter of time.

"Humanity has no protection against such an impact," said Professor Alan Fitzsimmons to Queen's University, Belfast (Northern Ireland).

In an interview with the BBC, astrophysicist urged something needed to shift the planet's course so that it would no longer have a chance to attack Earth.

Astronomers are tracking nearly 2,000 asteroids, comets and other objects that threaten Earth.

Since the meteorite's impact with the Earth 66 million years ago caused dinosaurs to extinction, the Earth has never witnessed a similar disaster.

However, smaller asteroids still frequently visit Earth with unpredictable consequences. For example, the meteorite hit Tunguska in Siberia, leveling an area of 2.137km 2 in 1908.

Professor Fitzsimmons called on amateur astronomers to help space agencies like NASA keep track of asteroids that threaten human life.

Researchers from the US Space Agency (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are working together to study the ambitious mission of using spacecraft to attack a dangerous asteroid. harm to the Earth.

They hope this test will pave the way to developing a system that deflects potentially asteroids.

However, NASA also adds that, in the next few hundred years, no large object will be able to attack and wipe out life on Earth.

  • Earth is at risk of being hit by hundreds of meteors
  • The 2011 meteorite AG5 could strike the earth by 2040
