Uses Nexium 40mg

Nexium 40mg is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid generated in the stomach.

Nexium 40mg is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions associated with excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Nexium 40mg can also be used to prevent stomach ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection or to use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nexium 40mg is not used to relieve heartburn symptoms immediately.

Dosage

Dosage for adults

  1. Usual dose for reflux esophagitis and GER D symptoms : 40 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, treatment can be continued at a dose of 20mg, 1 time / day for the next 4 weeks.
  2. Usual dose for heartburn : 20mg once daily for 2 to 4 weeks. After that, you can take a dose of 20mg, 1 time per day as needed to control symptoms.
  3. Usual dose combined with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat gastric ulcer : 20mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. To prevent stomach ulcers, you take a dose of 20mg, 1 time / day.
  4. Usual dosage for treating duodenal ulcer caused by H. pylori in adults : 20mg twice daily in combination with amoxicillin 1,000mg twice daily and clarithromycin 500mg twice daily. You take the medicine for 7 days.

Dosage for children

For children aged 11-17 years, the usual dose for reflux esophagitis is 20-40mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.

How to take Nexium 40mg

Nexium 40mg is usually taken within 4-8 weeks. Your doctor may recommend a second course of treatment if you need more healing time.

You should take the medication with a full glass of water, at least 1 hour before meals. Do not bite or chew slow release capsules.

See your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if your symptoms get worse while taking this medication.

  5. New or worsening symptoms of lupus - joint pain, a rash on the cheeks or arms that get worse in the sun.

Long-term use of Nexium 40mg can cause you to develop polypastoma gland polyps.

If you use esomeprazole for more than 3 years, you may be deficient in vitamin B12. Talk to your doctor about how to manage this condition if you have it.

Common side effects of Nexium 40mg may include:

Note when taking Nexium 40mg
