Where does Christmas originate?
Christmas is known as the holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus, however not everyone knows which country Christmas originated from.
Christmas is a major holiday in Western culture and Christian communities. Christmas (Noel, Christmas Day or X-mas) is the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas originated from Christians , to celebrate the birth of their religious leader, who they believe is God incarnated as a human.
According to most Christians, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in the Jewish land of Judea (today a city of Palestine), then part of the Roman Empire , sometime between 7 BC and AD 2. At that time, Judea was under the rule of the Roman Empire.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, then part of the Roman Empire.
The story of Jesus' birth is described in the New Testament as follows: "In the city of Nazareth there was a virgin Mary who was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. They were both descendants of King David, the great king of the Jews. One day the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said: 'You will have a son named Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Israel forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.'"
Mary told Joseph everything, and she became pregnant even though she was still a virgin. While Joseph was still worried, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to announce God's grace, so he stopped worrying and married Mary.
One day, the couple set out for their hometown of Bethlehem, 110 km away, to register for the tax roll as ordered by the Roman emperor Augustus. When they arrived, the inns were packed, so Joseph had to take his wife to a stable. At midnight, Mary gave birth to Jesus there. Joseph found a wooden manger containing animal feed, cleaned it thoroughly, and lined it with hay to make a cradle for the newborn child. At that time, only the shepherds were awake in the meadow. Suddenly, a bright light spread across the sky, and an angel appeared to announce to them the great news: "Today, in the city of David, a savior has been born to all, who is Christ the Lord. You will find him, a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."
The shepherds followed their instructions and found the baby Jesus in a manger in a stable. They told Mary and Joseph everything they had seen in the fields. They returned home, still filled with excitement, and told everyone they met about the miracle they had seen that night.
Although the exact date of Jesus' birth is unknown, the church in the early 4th century set his birth date as December 25, corresponding to the winter solstice on the Roman calendar.
Christmas is officially celebrated on December 25, but it is usually celebrated on the evening of December 24 , because the Jewish calendar begins at sunset, not midnight. The official celebration on December 25 is called the "day mass" , while the celebration on the night of December 24 is called the "vigil" and usually attracts more people.
On the night of the "Vigil" , all places such as churches or each household decorate the cave with a manger, inside there is a statue of the Child Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Around it are donkeys, statues of the Three Kings, some angels, Saint Jesus.
In the past, Christmas was meant to be a holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus. But now, in addition to its Christian meaning, Christmas is also a big holiday for families , a special day for everyone to reunite, gather and be together.
Over time, Christmas has become an international holiday and is better known for its images of pine trees and Santa Claus.
