Why are there so many people of Asian descent living in Russia?

While many people often think that a country must be uniform in appearance, the fact that they are "disappointed", is that out of 142 million inhabitants across Russia, there are more than 142 million inhabitants. 190 ethnic groups. Many Russian citizens have Asian characteristics.

Egor Kitov, a researcher at the Center for Physical Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gives three definitions of Russia's Asian citizens.

  1. First, they live in the regional parts of Russia's Asian territory.
  2. Second, these citizens are linguistically and culturally influenced, for example Turkic and Tungusic people can be considered Asian.
  3. The last one according to Egor Kitov, the Asian citizens of Russia can simply be described as Mongoloid (Great Asian Race), including Kalmyks, Evenks, Yukagirs, Buryats, Tuvans, Khakass, Chukchis, Koryaks, Eskimos and Aleuts.do

This researcher also confirmed that there are many other ethnic groups of the Mongoloid race in Russia. However, identifying them is especially difficult because "the territory of modern Russia consists of at least two Caucasian (European) and Mongoloid races" and, after many years of coexistence, they "mixed" with each other in various proportions.

Meanwhile, professor Ilya Perevozchikov thinks that the term "Asian" is quite vague, and at the same time, race and ethnicity have no relationship with each other. "Race is a biological concept, while ethnicity is just a social concept," the professor said.

According to the 2010 Russian Census, there are 193 ethnic groups in Russia and currently there are 10 most populous Asian ethnic groups in Russia. Meanwhile, by traditional definition, Russia has 9.5 million people of Asian descent, accounting for 6.5% of the country's population. Most of Russia's Asian citizens live in rural areas. The only urbanized Asian communities in Russia are mostly Koreans, Tatars, Uzbeks, and Kyrgyz.
