Dr. Mai also said that before, in 2003, an article of the Institute of Nutrition at primary schools in District 1, HCMC also showed that nearly one quarter of the children in this district were obese. , even, there is an individual school with an obesity rate of up to 40%.

Mai said that currently, the situation of obese children is increasing rapidly and it is worrisome that this rate will continue to be higher, especially in the next 10 years. According to her, this is much more worrying than the current situation of malnourished children. The reason is that obesity in children is more difficult to treat, often leading to many other cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure .

According to a recent survey of the Nutrition Institute at Tay Son Primary School (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi), up to one third of obese children in this school have hypertension and the same rate of hyperglycemia blood.

According to Mai, the cause of obese children often comes from some mistakes of parents in the process of nurturing. For example, when entering school age, the regime and nutritional needs of children are different from those of the first years of life. For example, for children 1-3 years of age, the demand for fat is 35-40% of the total nutritional needs, while in the age of 4-18 years, the demand for this substance decreases by nearly half (20-25%). However, many mothers still do not know how to adjust the appropriate diet to make children overweight, leading to rapid weight gain.

In addition, the habit of feeding children with ready-to-eat foods, candies, carbonated soft drinks . and giving them less opportunities to exercise is the reason why babies are easily obese.
