10 endangered species in 2012

Leatherback turtle. This is the largest turtle in the world and appears on the earth for over 100 million years. This species is facing a high risk of extinction, due to fishing activities and eggs being taken by humans.

Sumatran orangutan is one of two endangered orangutans. They live in the north and west of Sumatra island, Indonesia. The number of species declines rapidly due to the narrow living environment.

Gorilla mountain. They are classified by WWF as at risk of disappearing in 2012.

Atlantic bluefin tuna. This species is a victim of rampant exploitation. The number of species has decreased to an alarming level in the past few decades.

Vaquita dolphins live in the Gulf of California, Mexico. This species was classified as particularly endangered by WWF in 2012.

Irrawaddy dolphin. They live mainly on the Mekong and the Philippines. They are almost extinct by hunting and habitat loss.

The tiger species still has about 3,200 live in the wild, down 97% in the last century.

Snow leopard. This animal has about 6,000 wild animals in 12 countries, but the number of species is declining sharply due to hunting and habitat loss.

Javan rhinoceros The number of Javan rhinos (1 horn rhino) is only 50. In Vietnam, this rhino has just been declared extinct by WWF last October.

Asian elephants. The number of these species is declining and at risk of extinction.
