20 planets like Earth can survive life

An international research group draws a list of the 20 most Earth-like planets from 4,000 extrasolar planets discovered by the Kepler telescope.

According to the International Business Times, from the data collected by the Kepler telescope, researchers at the University of San Francisco, USA on August 2 published a list of 20 Earth-like planets among 216 possible planets. There is liquid water that supports life on the surface.

"This is a short list of planets in the region that may exist around the star's mother's life," said astrophysicist Stephen Kane, the study's lead author. "That means we can focus on the planets of this list and delve deeper to see if they are suitable for life."

The study also confirmed that the planets discovered by Kepler glasses are distributed both inside and outside the region where life can exist, indicating that a large number of planets or moons in the universe are more likely to contain life. theory.

Planets are classified according to location, size and composition. The position of the planet compared to the parent star is the most important characteristic. If it is too far away, the water will freeze like on Mars. However, if too close, the planet will experience the "lost greenhouse gas" effect like Venus, where the ocean evaporates completely.

The classification list is divided into 4 categories to help astronomers focus their research. Kane is studying 20 planets with the most potential for survival.

The classification project completed after more than three years with the participation of researchers from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), University of Bordeaux, University of Arizona, Cornell University, Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysics Center and NASA.
