African lions may disappear within a decade

The Sunday Times newspaper of South Africa quoted experts in the study because of the opposition to humans and animals, due to the loss of habitat for human economic development and disease (due to a virus). Similar to the immunodeficiency virus in cats, this lion population has plummeted from 200,000 in the 1980s to 30,000 today.

The research - just published at the Conference on the Conservation of Lions in South Africa and East Africa - showed a sharp decline in African lions in Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana.

According to experts working on the study, while the lion in Kruger National Park of South Africa is considered to have good living conditions, in Botswana's Okavango delta there are 103 baby lions born within 6 years, and only 10 children are alive.

Lions play an important role in South Africa's tourism industry.
