3 alternatives to sea level rise

Prior to the forecast of 1 m sea level rise in 2100, scientists proposed 3 disaster response plans at the meeting organized by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations on June 20. In particular, there is a resettlement plan to relocate infrastructure houses out of the danger area of sea level rise to penetrate deep into the continent.

A recent study by the World Bank predicts that Vietnam is one of the two worst (Bangladesh) countries in the world due to sea level rise. Accordingly, most of Vietnam's most fertile land will be submerged, agricultural land and GDP will suffer bad impacts.

The impact of sea level rise on coastal areas is assessed based on the scenario of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) by 2100 sea level rise of 1m.

At the Conference of "Forecasting global climate change, sea level rise", held by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations on June 20, GS.VS Vu Tuyen Hoang, Chairman Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (S&T) said that when sea level rise of 1m will be a disaster of the nation because of losing land to live!

Scientists believe that, in the past ten years, two major climate change phenomena are greenhouse gases and ENSO (including El Nino hot phase and El Nina cold phase occurs on equatorial sea - Thai Binh Ocean).

Dr. Nguyen The Tuong, Vietnam Marine Science and Technology Association gave evidence that Vietnam's average temperature increased by about 0.3 degrees Celsius; ENSO phenomenon is increasingly impacting causing strong fluctuations in climate and weather year after year.

1 meter sea level rise causes flooding, especially in the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Xuan Thuy coastal area (Nam Dinh). Coastal people will experience annual flooding.

Mangroves will make a series of forests now submerged. The sea level rise will threaten buildings to protect city dwellers, especially Ho Chi Minh City, where recent high-tide events often occur and no scientist has given any opinion. specific about this phenomenon.

Sea level rise threatens industrial, transport (port), dyke, foot and foot dams, and reinforcement costs are very expensive. Operation of oil and gas rigs, oil and gas transport systems on the sea, coastal power plants will be affected.

Sea level rise will cause biomes to change their structure and composition, additional reserves will be reduced, the hydration, physical and biological regimes will deteriorate and marine life will be damaged. It is forecasted that the stock of economic marine species will be reduced by one third compared to the present.

Dr. Nguyen The Tuong proposed 3 adaptive measures: adequate protection (heightening dyke routes, strengthening coastal management, preventing saline intrusion, enhancing land and coastal structures like ports, warehouse, industrial zone .); Adaptation measures (renovating infrastructure and changing living habits of coastal residents); Evading measures (relocation of infrastructure to move out of dangerous areas deep into the continent).

According to Dr. Tuong, it can be based on the actual situation in the localities to apply and implement one of these 3 options.

It is known that in the past there was a scenario of sea level rise given at 3 levels: 0.5m - 1m - 1.5m. Accordingly, at 1 meter, Ho Chi Minh City will be flooded.
