According to the AP, the fish population - also known as fake killer whales (shaped like killer whales but actually dolphins, not whales) are stranded from September 22 (local time). ) at Upanema beach, Areia Branca (about 330km from the state capital of Rio Grande do Norte).

The environmental workers and seafarers tried to help them return to the sea, but at least 7 were dead, including 6 dead on the beach and 1 child attacked by sharks after returning to the ocean. .

It is unclear why these fish are stranded, but biologists are examining the hypothesis that a fish in the herd may be sick or injured to swim into shallow waters and other fish have followed it (Dolphins are very high social species, often they do not abandon a sick or injured member of the herd).

Another theory is that they are chasing a herd of fish and then trapped in the high sand in Upanema.

This is one of the largest stranded dolphins / whales in Bazil in the past few decades. In 1991, about 19 whales were also stranded near the town of Sao Miguel do Gostoso.
