300 tons of contaminated water leaked out

On August 21, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said that at least 300 tons of highly contaminated water in a reservoir of the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant had leaked out.

Very high levels of radioactive water leakage were discovered on August 19, when the water level in the reservoir was below 2.9m. The tank is 11m high, containing about 1,000 tons of water. It is estimated that 300 tons of contaminated water in the tank has leaked out.

According to TEPCO, the lost radioactive water has a concentration of 80 million becquerels per liter, emitting beta rays, like strontium-90.

TEPCO is trying to prevent radioactive water from spreading and cleaning contaminated soil. However, they have not checked whether other tanks are leaking.

It is known that the tanks were built around the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant to contain contaminated water flowing from nuclear reactors that had suffered incidents in the earthquake - tsunami in early 2011, since then. Many times the contaminated water leaked out.
