The South Asian nation has about 1,100 languages in 1961, but nearly 220 of them have disappeared, the Times of India newspaper quoted Ganesh Devy, co-researcher, as saying.
'We found 780 languages, and we could lose about 100 languages, but together we had nearly 880 types. The rest has disappeared completely , "said Devy.
Most of the wiped languages belong to nomadic nomadic communities throughout the country.
The main reason for the unfortunate loss is due to lack of recognition, minority communities are displaced, stigma towards language types that are listed as underdeveloped .
The 1961 test recorded a total of 1,652 languages, but then this number was reduced to 1,100, since experts initially included variants of multiple languages into the list.
