8.2 degree earthquake off the island of Fiji

An 8.2-degree earthquake struck off the island of Fiji with the epicenter deep in the ocean so there was no tsunami warning.

The earthquake occurred at 12:19 am today in local time, about 361 km east of Fiji's Suva capital and the town is located at a depth of 559 km under the sea, according to the US Geological Agency.

Currently the authorities have not issued a tsunami warning because the epicenter is deep in the ocean. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center observed a few small waves that were not dangerous.

Many aftershocks reached 6.2 degrees after the earthquake, but Suva residents said they did not feel anything unusual. Fiji authorities reported that the earthquake "did not create an immediate danger to the Fiji region".

The earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most frequent seismic activity areas, about 71% of the world's most intense earthquakes took place at this ring of fire. .
