The size of the Christmas tree worm is not too large with an average length of only 4cm. However, due to their unique shape, beauty and color, they are very easy to detect and are among the few most well-known marine stem worms in the world.

Each Christmas tree worm possesses two colorful heads, sticking out of its body like a pipe. These Christmas tree-like crowns consist of tentacles like hairs, spread out from the main backbone of the worm. The tentacles are used to help respiratory worms and catch prey - phytoplankton floating in the sea.

Christmas tree worms are lazy animals, meaning that when they find a favorite place, they will lie in that place and not move much. In fact, although the colorful heads of this worm are very visible, most of their bodies cling to the caves they have dug deep into living coral reefs.

When motivated or startled, pine worms will quickly shrink into caves to hide potential predators.
