Lead researcher Allan Butterfield of the University of Kentucky said that besides being used to strengthen bones, vitamin D has also been found to play an important role in internal organs and cells, including the brain.
The new report, published in the Free Radical Biology and Medicine Journal, shows that middle-aged mice follow a diet low in vitamin D for several months showing signs of brain damage.
Many different proteins in the brain are destroyed before the attack of free radical chemicals.
Experimental subjects also degenerated cognitive ability, based on the results of tests of learning and memory.
Butterfield experts warn in developed and developing countries, the amount of vitamin D in the human body is often low, especially in the elderly.
