A new cicada is found in Cuc Phuong National Park

Scientists from the Vietnam Museum of Nature, the University of Connecticut, the United States and the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences of Belgium have studied the classification of cicadas of Pomponia in Vietnam and Cambodia. The study results published a new species for science and recorded a new species for Cambodia's cicadas.

New cicadas in Cuc Phuong National Park

New species of cicada for science is named Pomponia brevialata Lee & Pham , 2015 . This species is distinguished from other species of the Pomponia linearis species by brown spots on the ribs, rm, and m of the anterior wing; Male belly is funnel-shaped. This breed is similar to Pomponia cinctimanus (Walker, 1850) and Pomponia ramifera (Walker, 1850) (both species are distributed in Sylhet, Bangladesh). However, this species is distinguished from the above two species because the spines of the clasper are narrower and significantly longer as well as brown spots on the front wing.

Research specimens of species Pomponia brevialata Lee & Pham, 2015 collected at Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh province . The research specimens were kept at the Royal Belgian Academy of Natural Sciences and Vietnam Museum of Nature, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

With the announcement of this new species, the total number of species of Pomponia has increased to 36 species. In which Vietnam has 5 species.

The newly recorded cicadas for the cicadas of Cambodia are Pomponia backanensis Pham & Yang, 2009. This species has been declared a new species for science since 2009 with specimens collected in Ba Be National Park , Bac Kan and Tam Dao National Park , Vinh Phuc province.
